What happened when the leaders stayed silent…

When my gym suddenly shut down with no warning, it wasn’t just a surprise—it was a missed opportunity.

In this Two-Minute Tip, I’m sharing the leadership lesson behind the closure, and why trying to solve problems alone can cost more than you think.

If you’re a leader feeling the pressure to "figure it out" on your own, this is your reminder: your team wants to help. You just have to let them in.

  • A few weeks ago, I showed up to my gym for my early morning workout, and the doors were locked. Out of nowhere, just locked. Closed for good. No warning, no communication upfront, just done.

I was sad and frustrated. It was such a great community. I loved this gym, and it's unfortunate because I think if the owners would have shared in advance with members that they were struggling, that folks would've stepped up to help. I would have been willing to pay more. I think members would have rallied to recruit more members, but instead they were quiet about it and then it was too late to do anything about it.

I often see the same thing with leaders. So often, leaders feel like if they're facing a challenge or there's tough news for the team, they kind of shield people. They try to sit in a room quietly and figure it out on their own, rather than inviting their team into the struggle, inviting their team into the problem solving.

And so what I want to encourage you to do is if you are a leader who's facing a challenge, or you're aware of a challenge within the organization that could impact your team, take the bold step to involve them earlier, to be transparent, and include them in some problem solving and brainstorming.

You don't have to figure it out on your own. I think you might be surprised about the way people step up and rally behind you to help.
